Thousands of Blockchains: Running Linera Microchains on Acurast’s Edge Fleet
Zug, May 22, 2025 — Today, we’re excited to announce the start of an exploratory partnership between Acurast, the fastest-growing DePIN compute network, and Linera, the pioneering microchain-based blockchain platform. Our goal? To run thousands of Linera’s programmable microchains at the edge — across thousands of Acurast devices — harnessing Linera’s modularity and massive scalability alongside Acurast’s unique execution environment.
Why Acurast + Linera Makes Perfect Sense
WASM-First, Rust-Powered Logic
- Linera microchains are written in Rust and compiled into lightweight WebAssembly modules.
- Acurast processors run Node.js with WASM support, making deployment of Linera microchains seamless.
Massive Horizontal Scaling
- Linera’s architecture scales by spinning up microchains. All microchains are validated by the same validators and have the same level of finality — allowing Linera applications to distribute computations across chains easily, without security tradeoffs.
- Acurast’s network already comprises tens of thousands of devices- attested by Apple and Google for their secure environments — ready to run individual Linera clients operating their own microchains to interact with Linera users and other devices.
Secure, Sandboxed Execution
- WebAssembly enforces strong sandboxing, isolating each microchain’s state and logic.
- Acurast’s execution environment adds a layer of Linux namespace isolation, ensuring microchains run securely and tamper-proof.
Community-based Auditing in Linera
- To increase decentralization and resilience, Linera’s whitepaper outlines a long-term vision in which community members actively audit blocks certified by validators — allowing everyday users to participate in the protocol’s security and earn rewards — with minimal hardware requirements.
- Acurast’s decentralized compute network offers an ideal foundation to bring this vision to life. By enabling users to securely run auditing software on their personal devices — such as smartphones equipped with trusted execution environments — Acurast lowers the barrier to entry for becoming a Linera auditor and helps scale the network’s resilience through broad, distributed participation.
Predictable, Fee-Free Edge Computation
- Linera’s model — where one microchain pushes data to others — is ideal for DePIN workloads like sensor aggregation or price oracles.
- Acurast’s experience in developing modular services — such as oracles, bridges, and crawlers — on its DePIN network aligns perfectly with Linera’s architecture.
Looking Ahead
By combining Linera’s microchain paradigm with Acurast’s decentralized compute layer, we can pioneer new classes of edge-native blockchain applications — without a single VM or Kubernetes cluster in sight. We look forward to co-designing this proof-of-concept and sharing our learnings with both communities.
Stay tuned for updates as we explore the edge in the microchain blockspace!
About Linera
Linera was founded with the vision of empowering users through globally accessible, decentralized infrastructure that facilitates real-time interactions between clients, chains, and services. Its novel architecture lets users interact directly with small chains of blocks, called microchains, allowing applications to read and write onchain data with strong guarantees of performance and security. Founder and CEO, Mathieu Baudet, PhD, was an early research engineer on the Meta Libra/Novi project and is a coauthor of the FastPay protocol.
About Acurast
Acurast is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) and a global fleet of smartphones to provide distributed, secure edge compute. Acurast redefines decentralized compute with smartphones — battle-tested devices trusted by billion. With built-in TEEs and top-tier HSMs, these devices offer security that surpasses traditional servers.
